It was not until we saw the picture of the earth, from the moon, that we realized how small
and how helpless this planet is something that we must hold in our arms and care for.
- Margaret Mead
As a new entity which brings a basin-wide perspective, the Lake Superior Conservancy and
Watershed (LSCWC) recognizes that significant opportunities and challenges lie ahead. Our
mission is broad, comprehensive and international in scope. We are focused on ensuring the
long-term sustainable health of the watershed through basin-wide communication, education,
scientific study, preservation and conservation.
We know we are not alone in this vision. There are a multitude of individuals, groups and
organizations engaged in projects to protect lakes, streams, rivers, shoreline and wetlands
close to home. Others are working to improve air and water quality. While still other offer
information and innovative ways to reduce waste and pollution, and work to restore the
environment. We have much to learn about these initiatives.
Our Board of Directors, Advisory Council and staff in turn, have much to offer. Our role will take
many forms, but our goal will always be to support individuals, communities and organization in their
actions towards ensuring the long-term sustainable health of Lake Superior and its ecosystems.
